What is Civic Engagement?
Civic Engagement includes both an awareness of public issues and active participation with community organizations.
Students who are civically engaged apply what they have learned and generate new knowledge across disciplines through research and scholarship. Through these partnerships, UCLA develops tomorrow's leaders for a diverse democracy.
About the Minor
The Civic Engagement minor is designed to provide students with a core analytical and theoretical framework for community building, governance, and the use of civic resources. It examines traditions of service and the role of social critique in our democracy, including explorations of key concepts such as social capital, civil society, and social innovation. The minor can be paired with any major as an applied and active way of putting disciplinary tools to use. It is intended for highly motivated students of any ideological perspective who are committed to research on methods of vigorous public engagement.
